Kierre's Review of Candyman 2021 ★★★

Watched Oct 09, 2021

Candyman is a straight sequel to the 1992 film of the same name. This is a modern day film about a man named Anthony (played by Yahya Abdul-Mateen II), who is an artist and becomes obsessed with a newly gentrified Housing Project neighborhood where Candyman once terrorized the community. Candyman was a man who had a hook for a hand, and gave candy to children and was eventually killed by the police. Story has it that if you say his name 5 times in the mirror he will kill you, similar to Bloody Mary.

I actually wasn't the biggest fan of the original film and always felt the premise was a bit silly. I always wondered why anyone would say his name in the mirror in the first place and found the original film to be a bit slow. This film was also a bit slower in my opinion to get to the actual horror. There are many creepy elements in the film, but for a sequel they sure do take a long time to get us to actually seeing Candyman do anything. They do add in some "Social Justice/Police Brutality" elements but I've seen it better done in other recent films. While I didn't dislike the film. it was just a pretty decent horror film in my opinion. However it is one that I most likely will not revisit.
