Just a super fun time here! With HAPPY DEATH DAY, Christopher Landon took the slasher genre and melded it with the GROUNDHOG-DAY-style "time loop" story (a favorite mini-subgenre of mine). Here he takes the slasher genre and melds it with the "body swap" subgenre, going so far as to echo the title of the most famous body swap movie (FREAKY FRIDAY) with his own title.
In other words, you could argue that he's repeating himself. But HAPPY DEATH DAY was awesome, and FREAKY is nearly every bit as entertaining. Will he need to maybe come up with something other than taking a slasher and mixing it up with a goofy, semi-dormant comedy subgenre next time? Maybe. But honestly, as long as he keeps making movies as entertaining as these two, I'm not going to mind much.
Both Kathryn Newton and Vince Vaughn are terrific here as a teenager and serial killer who swap bodies following some mystical knife shenanigans, but Vaughn is a particular delight. The supporting characters are a lot of fun too. Bottom line is that it's just a really fun horror comedy, well-made and creative and surprisingly VERY gory! (Severed) thumbs up!
