On the one hand, I have to appreciate that a movie with an ending like…this…is on screens nationwide. Also, Jessie Buckley is excellent as always, and it looks great. However, the metaphor is reductive and crushingly obvious from the start, and compared with Alex Garland’s previous films, both outstanding (Ex Machina and Annihilation), this feels small and hollow and frankly kind of stupid. Empty provocation without substance or nuance. And while certainly creepy and effective as a thriller at times (before it goes wildly off the rails in a bad way), let’s just say I didn’t find the conclusion worth the journey.
