A sweet little movie, no more and no less. The comedy/drama balance doesn’t quite work all the time, and surprisingly enough it’s the comedy part of the equation that is often less effective. As a drama, it may be fairly standard stuff but it’s moving and effective.
I’m always a fan of seeing a comedic actor take a serious role and succeeding, and Kevin Hart is genuinely excellent here. The large supporting cast, which includes Alfre Woodard, Frankie Faison, Lil Rel Howery and more, is great company as well.
