I was completely taken aback by how bleak this is at times! I mean, it is totally a Guardians of the Galaxy movie and all, but this thing is dark. And weird! And intense! And violent! James Gunn sure went out swinging on what is probably his swan song for Marvel.
At no point does it feel like a “Marvel movie” (and I mean that as a compliment). Rather, it feels like the sequel to Akira that we never got, combined with the sequel to The Fifth Element that we never got, combined with the freakin’ Plague Dogs (yes, that dark). Wild!
Yeah, this is kind of a stream-of-consciousness review. I loved it! Truly out there hard sci-fi but still fun and crazy and moving. The soundtrack is predictably awesome too, featuring several classics everyone knows but also good off-the-beaten-path stuff, including a very deep cut from (my hero) Alice Cooper!
