Jason's Review of Summer of Soul (…or, When the Revolution Could Not Be Televised) 2021 ★★★★★

Watched Jul 03, 2021

This was stupendous. I highly doubt there will be a better film released this year. A powerful and beautiful documentary about the Harlem Cultural Festival, a six weekend concert series in 1969 that brought together hundreds of thousands of people and many of the greatest musical artists of the day. It was filmed, but has amazingly never seen the light of day until now.

The live music dominates the film, but it’s complemented wonderfully by reminiscences by attendees and artists who fondly remember. Truly a snapshot of a moment in time. Awesome.
