Kierre's Review of Concrete Cowboy 2021 ★★★

Watched Apr 11, 2021

#Concretecowboy #Neflix Boyz in the Hood on Horses! Concrete Cowboy stars Caleb McLaughlin (Stranger Things) as Cole, a boy living in Detroit with his single mother who can't seem to stay out of trouble. He is forced to go live with his dad (played by Idris Elba) , who resides in Philly, in order to get straightened out. Upon arriving he learns that the street they live on are part of a community that keeps and rides horses, Black Urban Cowboys, basically. They keep horse in stables that are not up to code and his father even keeps his horse in his living room. The story basically centers around Cole's wanting to be apart of the Cowboy life and also having to choose between running with drug dealers and living that type of lifestyle. I did enjoy this film but outside of the Horses and Cowboy element it was basically like "Boyz in the Hood" to me. The story was interesting and I'm not downplaying the horse element but that really is the only difference here. Also in the film they include some of the real Fletcher Street Riders and I often wonder if it would have been better served as a Documentary about the Riders vs. a made up film. Overall I do recommend this film but it wasn't anything too special.
