Kierre's Review of The Northman 2022 ★★★

Watched Apr 23, 2022

"This film plays a like a watered-down version of "Gladiator" in my opinion."

The Northman is a film set before medieval times and stars Alexander Skarsgård as Amleth a young Prince whose father is the King (Ethan Hawke) and his Queen mother is played by (Nicole Kidman). His Uncle Fjolnir (Claes Bang) kills his own brother in order to take the throne for himself, and tries to kill Amleth who runs away, but Fjolnir also kidnaps the Queen and makes her his Queen as well. Amleth vows to return to revenge his father, kill Fjolnir and to rescue his mother. Many years go by and Amleth finds an opportunity to return and become a slave in order to get closer to Fjolnir. The film also Co-stars, Anya Taylor-Joy and Willem Dafoe.

I was expecting something very epic and action-packed, and although the film does have plenty of action, I came away a little underwhelmed. The acting is great, and the story isn't bad, but I felt most of the action I saw was in the trailer. This film plays a like a watered-down version of "Gladiator" in my opinion. It is a remarkably similar story of someone whose family is taken away from him by an evil King, and he must return as a slave to get his vengeance. I still enjoyed it overall but it wasn't quite as badass as I was hoping.
